Now that I'm starting my n+1st year of n years of college, I've had quite an opportunity to spend a lot of time doing absolutely nothing. :) Anyway, in addition to everything else, I've been teaching myself how to write Perl scripts for use not only on the Web and in CGI scripts, but also for Unix shell scripting in general.

For the past 10 months, I've been working at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where I have many opportunities to utilize my various programming talents. (If you want a more complete biography, just ask.)

The articles that I'm presenting are mainly targeted at webmasters who run sites on Unix. Many people use a web server called Apache, available for free at http://www.apache.org. All of the examples and sample scripts are designed to run on Apache.

If your experience is limited to the Macintosh or Windows GUI environment, you'll find the text-based setup and administration intimidating at first. Don't worry. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded.

If you're hopelessly stuck running on a Windows or Mac based web server, you'll probably find that much of the software presented here won't work "out of the box." Instead, concentrate on the ideas that are being presented and you'll be able to work out the details in any language, including Microsoft's Active Server Pages, Server-Side Java or basically any modern programming language.
